Years after the launch, Bliss is home with Otto and a teenage daughter when the lottery assigns her a case nobody else has connected — children, none of them prominent, vanishing across the fleet over a decade. She grabs the tablet she's carried since the spacewalk and boards a transport. The trail moves between ships that have already started drifting from each other, through a biological research program on the Green Ship that nobody has looked at hard enough, and into a room with the person responsible. They don't deny it. They explain it. They believe what they did was right, and that's worse than a monster. Bliss solves the case. The fleet doesn't survive what she finds.
